Are you currently enrolled in a Communications,  Marketing,  Media,  Journalism,  or Public Relations program,  and looking for a paid,  hands-on professional experience?  If yes,  then we have great news for you!  We are seeking a highly motivated and creative student who is eager for a chance to be mentored by our top-notch team of communications professionals for our summer 2024 Communications Internship!

Get immersed in the Communications field and take your experience to the next level!  We have several utility-wide communication projects offering real-world learning and networking opportunities in a business setting.  The successful candidate will gain first-hand experience with exposure to the unique qualities of the electrical utility industry and learn what it means to work in public power.  Join our team this summer and help us share our story!

This is a full time,  non-exempt,  temporary position with an expected duration of 10 to 12 weeks over the summer.  Salary will depend on qualifications including any relevant past job experience and/or coursework completed.  There are limited benefits available with this position.  Flexibility and time off will be allowed throughout the internship as needed and approved.This internship is in-person at the Kennewick,  WA building.   Housing and transportation are NOT provided.

Position Purpose/Summary:

The primary purpose of this position is to assist the Communications team with a variety of internal and external customer communication efforts including:

  • Communicate Benton PUD’s values and mission internally through a variety of multimedia to drive employee engagement.
  • Create graphics/artwork and write content for internal employee newsletter,  communication monitors,  and intranet.
  • Assist with community outreach and education including logistics,  event preparation (set up/take down),  and capturing event highlights in photo and video (e.g.,  Tri-Cities STEM Career Academy,  Benton Franklin County Fair/Parade).

Responsibilities

  1. Highly motivated with strong interpersonal skills and the ability to quickly assimilate into a team
  2. Good listening and questioning skills,  and the ability to establish project objectives and priorities with strong attention to detail
  3. Self-starter with strong project and task management discipline and skills
  4. Desire and ability to quickly learn new software systems through direct instruction and independent study
  5. Creative communication and design qualities with strong technical verbal and writing skills for print and non-print marketing materials
  6. Strong aptitude for researching and applying new equipment and technology
  7. Interest and understanding in data analytics to help identify and visually display trends in online engagement,  insights,  and tracking of community events
  8. Experience with graphic design programs (Adobe,  Canva,  or similar)
  9. Desire to provide excellent customer service
  10. Strong interest and comfortability with community event coordination and public involvement
  11. Video creation skills
  12. Social media content creation

Qualifications

Required: 

  • High School Diploma/GED
  • Currently enrolled as a junior or senior with studies toward a Bachelor’s in Communications,  Marketing,  Media,  Journalism,  Public Relations,  or equivalent

Preferred: 

  • Experience with Adobe or similar multimedia software
  • Experience with videography (video capture,  creation,  design,  editing)
  • Intermediate-Advanced Microsoft Office Suite including publishing effects
