Our expert staff provide multi-disciplinary solutions to complex energy and environmental issues.  Key capabilities include science (chemical and mechanical).  We employ a systems perspective that includes,  discovery technology development and scale-up as well as economic,  regulatory,  and market acceptance issues necessary for successful technology commercialization.  EP&MD focuses on three mission contributions:  Clean Fossil Energy,  Electricity Infrastructure,  &  Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy.

Responsibilities

Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL)  is seeking ambitious,  high-caliber junior or senior high school students for intern assignment within the High School Student Research Intern (HS SRI)  Program.  This internship provides an opportunity for students interested in preparing for careers in science,  technology,  engineering or mathematics (STEM -  or Computer Science)  to work during the academic year with a scientist/mentor in a specified research area.  Students attend regular classes in their school for one-half day.

 

The student will assist with foam behavior tasks,  seeking to develop experimental and machine learning strategies to aid computational modeling efforts.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Applicants must be currently enrolled as a sophomore,  junior or senior in a public or private high school at time of application.
  • Applicants must be 16 years of age by start date.
  • Applicants must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher (from beginning of 9th grade to current standing).

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Relevant course work desired in pre-calculus or higher,  and chemistry
  • Experience with Microsoft office tools,  desire to learn basic programming
  • Good communication and organization skills,  ability to work remotely and independently,  experience employing safety procedures,  strong work ethic,  understands importance of working efficiently,  interested in atmospheric sciences and geology
