Responsibilities

PNNL is seeking Highschool candidates for assignments within the Bridging Opportunities for Leadership and Training in STEM (BOLTS)  program.  The Computing and Analytics Division is looking for individuals who have a passion for solving critical national challenges using advanced computational,  statistical,  and mathematical techniques.  The intern will be given an opportunity to be presented with complex problems in national security,  energy,  and science;  apply cutting-edge research to make our nation safer and stronger;  develop complex computer code;  develop and participate in cyber competitions;  design new visualization;  work with big data and optimize solutions for energy. 


The internship can be in one of the four following technical groups: 
1. Applied Statistics &  Computational Modeling 
2.  Cyber Security 
3.  Data Sciences &  Analytics 
4.  Visual Analytics

In order to have a complete application package,  the three (3)  listed items below are required and must be uploaded correctly per the below instructions: 
Combine the below into one (1)  document 
1)  Resume 
2)  Current unofficial transcript,  cumulative GPA must be listed 
3) Personal statement describing how your specific interests pertain to one of the focus areas listed above,  such as personal projects,  hobbies outside of class,  or any other activity to help you gain extra experience in your field beyond textbook knowledge. 


When prompted to “Upload Resume”  all documents listed above must be bundled into ONE SINGLE FILE for resume upload. 

 

If any one of the 3 components are not included,  applications will be rejected and will no longer be considered.  

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Applicants must be currently enrolled as a sophomore,  junior or senior in a public or private high school at time of application.
  • Applicants must be 16 years of age by start date.
  • Applicants must have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher (from beginning of 9th grade to current standing).
  • Must be enrolled in Chiawana high school and are currently of Senior status 
  • Enrolled in PNNL BOLTS program 
  • Demonstated participation of BOLTS program 
  • Some projects may require U.S. citizenship 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Excitement to learn new skills and tools in programs like R,  Python,  etc. 
  • Discrete event simulation (e.g.,  Arena) 
  • Agent based modeling, Java,  JavaScript,  web design,  software testing,  C#,  C++,  SQL,   and JSON
